ROG Xbox Ally: This Is NOT an Xbox Experience!
I tested the ROG Xbox Ally expecting something close to a portable Xbox — Game Pass vibes, quick sessions, console polish. What you actually get is a Windows handheld with an Xbox-styled front end: great speakers and solid ergonomics, but laggy menus, mushy D-pad/shoulder feel versus a real Xbox pad, thick bezels, a dim 1080p 120 Hz panel, and enough pop-ups and input quirks that “jump in for a quick match” rarely feels console-simple.
Call of Duty and other titles can run, but launch friction and Windows friction break the fantasy — this is not a true Xbox console replacement. Indie and lighter games are the sweet spot on the standard Ally; for heavier AAA multiplayer (Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, etc.) the more powerful black Ally X / higher-tier handhelds make more sense, preferably on sale around the $700 vibe rather than full MSRP as your main PC dock too.
